If you’re worried about the heat and humidity on your wedding day, this article is for you.
When I first moved to Mexico to photograph weddings, I quickly learned that white is the best color for a dress shirt in hot, humid conditions. Darker colors not only show sweat but also leave visible stains once the sweat dries. With white shirts, sweat is less noticeable up close, and dried sweat stains are virtually invisible. That’s why I always wear a long-sleeve white dress shirt to every wedding.
Initially, I didn’t pay attention to shirt labels, but I soon discovered that 100% cotton shirts are significantly cooler. Even a small synthetic blend can make a shirt noticeably hotter. While 100% linen is also a good option for staying cool, it tends to wrinkle more, so I prefer cotton. Some people have recommended synthetic blends that are supposedly as cool as cotton, but I haven’t tried them since I’ve found something that works for me.
A well-fitted shirt is crucial for wedding photographs, as it prevents the shirt from bunching up around the waist. If you don’t usually wear fitted dress shirts, find one that suits your body type. I recommend Brooks Brothers for their well-tailored shirts available in various styles. If you can’t find a perfect fit, consider getting a shirt tailored or custom-made.
