Asking your guests to unplug their phones is a more common topic in North America than at destination weddings in Mexico. Here, people often have their phones off due to international data charges, and service at ceremony locations, especially on the beach, is generally poor. However, guests do take photos with their phones, which is fine as long as it doesn’t distract from enjoying the ceremony.
It’s entirely up to you how to handle phone use at your wedding. The limited service and WiFi at resorts usually keep guests off social media. If you want to be the first to announce your wedding on social media, ask guests to refrain from posting until the next day.
Though I don’t mind guests taking photos, it’s important they’re present for your ceremony. They’re there to support you, not just to capture photos. Encourage them to enjoy the moment and leave the photography to the professionals.
Please ask your guests to leave iPads in the room. They are large, block faces, and ruin photographs and grab attention away from the ceremony. Most people under 60 understand this, but for those who don’t, kindly ask them to leave their iPads behind.
Technology rarely ruins weddings here in Mexico. Most guests leave their phones in their pockets and turned off. However, if you see someone using an iPad earlier in the trip, please have a polite conversation with them. Explain that you will share the professional photos and that their love and support are more important than their photos.
